Nobody prepares you for the absence you feel when your child moves out.
One day you are planning meals around their favorite foods, keeping the pantry stocked with the snacks they love, and wondering if you have enough milk. Then, almost overnight, you realize the refrigerator stays full longer, the grocery bill gets smaller, and their bedroom sits quiet.
It is a strange mix of emotions. You are proud of the person they have become, excited for everything ahead of them, and yet there is an emptiness that catches you off guard.
Then, little by little, something unexpected happens.
You begin rediscovering yourself.
You have more time for the hobbies you put on hold while raising a family. You can travel without working around school calendars. You can meet friends for lunch in the middle of the week. Many couples enjoy reconnecting after years of focusing on raising children, while others embrace the freedom to create a life that is completely their own.
As the days go by, many people start noticing something else. They begin looking at their home differently.
The question is not always, “Should I downsize?”
I actually think there is a better question.
Is your home still supporting the life you want to live?
Maybe the answer is yes.
Or maybe this is the season where you want more freedom to travel. Maybe you would rather spend weekends enjoying your life instead of maintaining a large yard. Maybe a single level home is starting to sound more appealing. Or maybe you still want room for family to gather during the holidays, but not rooms that sit empty the rest of the year.
There is no right answer because every family is different.
When I work with clients, we spend less time talking about square footage and more time talking about lifestyle.
What do you want your Saturdays to look like?
Do you still need four bedrooms?
Would you rather be closer to your favorite restaurants, walking trails, or the beach?
Do you want a backyard made for entertaining, or would you rather have very little maintenance?
The best home is not always the biggest one. It is the one that supports the life you are living today and the life you hope to build tomorrow.
If this season has you looking at your home through a different lens, I would love to have that conversation with you. There is never any pressure to move. Sometimes it simply helps to explore what is possible.
