Best Dog Beaches in Santa Cruz

Siberian Husky enjoying Seabright Beach

If you’re a dog owner living in or exploring Santa Cruz County, you already know this area is basically paradise for beach loving pups. Between the ocean air, bluff walks, open coastline, and relaxed outdoor culture, there are so many places where dogs and their humans can genuinely enjoy the lifestyle together.

One thing I realized recently, though, is that it’s surprisingly hard to find a good local guide that explains not just which beaches allow dogs, but which ones actually feel enjoyable for dog owners. Especially if you’re looking for off leash spots, tide pool exploring, or neighborhoods with a more laid back coastal vibe.

So I put together a guide to some of the best dog friendly beaches in Santa Cruz County, starting with the best off leash options first.

Map of the Best Dog Friendly Beaches in Santa Cruz County

Best Off Leash Beaches

1. Its Beach

This is probably the most iconic off leash dog beach in Santa Cruz County.

I used to call Its Beach “Disneyland for dogs” because it’s basically the happiest dog place on earth. Off leash dogs running, playing, swimming, and making instant best friends while owners soak in the West Cliff views. Just don’t leave your beach bag unattended unless you want it mistaken for a fire hydrant.

Located below Lighthouse Field, this beach has a very social, energetic feel and is perfect for dogs that love other dogs.

Things to know:
• Stair access down from the bluff
• Off leash dog culture
• Beautiful sunsets
• Great place to meet other local dog owners

2. Mitchell’s Cove Beach

Mitchell’s Cove feels quieter and more tucked away than Its Beach. It has a more local neighborhood feel and is known for tide pools, rocky shoreline exploring, and beautiful West Cliff scenery.

This is also one of the beaches people remember for the staircase access down into the cove.

At low tide, the tide pools and rock formations make this spot especially beautiful.

Things to know:
• Seasonal tide pools at low tide
• Steep stair access
• Smaller cove atmosphere
• More relaxed and less chaotic than Its Beach

3. Lighthouse Field State Beach

Even if you are not heading directly to Its Beach, Lighthouse Field is one of the best dog lifestyle areas in Santa Cruz.

The bluff trails, ocean views, and walking paths create one of the most dog friendly daily routines you can imagine. It’s one of those places that really captures the Santa Cruz coastal lifestyle.

Things to know:
• Incredible coastal bluff walks
• Connected to Its Beach access
• Popular with locals
• Amazing sunset views

Best Leashed Dog Friendly Beaches

4. Manresa State Beach

If you want long peaceful beach walks with lots of space, Manresa is hard to beat.

This beach feels wide open and less crowded than many central Santa Cruz beaches. Great for energetic dogs that need distance walking and owners looking for a quieter experience.

5. Seabright Beach

Seabright has such a classic Santa Cruz neighborhood feel. Close to the harbor, walkable, and easygoing, it’s a great option for leashed beach walks followed by coffee or lunch nearby.

6. Rio Del Mar State Beach

Rio Del Mar offers a beautiful South County coastline feel with wide beaches and great morning walking conditions. It’s a favorite for quieter beach days and scenic sunset walks.

7. Twin Lakes State Beach

Twin Lakes combines harbor scenery, beach access, and neighborhood walkability. A great option if you want a mix of beach time and nearby restaurants or harbor activity.

Tips for a Great Beach Day With Your Dog

• Check tide conditions before heading out, especially for tide pool exploring
• Bring extra water because ocean water and salty dogs do not mix well
• Keep an eye on beach rules since off leash regulations can change
• Pack out everything you bring in so don’t forget the dog poop bags
• Watch belongings at off leash beaches because curious dogs are everywhere

Santa Cruz County really is a special place for dog owners. Whether you love long quiet shoreline walks or the joyful chaos of off leash dog beaches, there’s something here for every kind of coastal lifestyle.
